Curriculum
Geography
Geography is studied throughout the school and is a popular option at GCSE. Opportunities for fieldwork studies form an intrinsic part of the course at each key stage, the demonstration of fieldwork skills being an essential element of both GCSE and A-level examinations. The examination board selected is AQA.
Year 7 students complete their year with a local river study exercise whilst those in Year 8 head for Lyndhurst and the New Forest. Boys in Year 9 will have the opportunity to take part in an overseas expedition to a location such as Morocco, Croatia or Turkey. As well as coping with an unfamiliar culture, language and environment they will also have to meet the physical challenge of outdoor activities such as trekking – perhaps camel assisted – mountain biking and sea kayaking.
GCSE students are offered a short residential field course in the UK as an opportunity to collect data for the Controlled Assessment element of their exam. Recent venues include the Peak District, Wenlock Edge and South Devon.
Sixth form students are offered a similar residential course in Snowdonia in order to develop their knowledge of glaciated scenery and river processes. In addition, in alternate years there is a longer visit to Iceland and the chance to join a major expedition to locations such as Bolivia, Peru, Zambia and Botswana.
